Language Update - Tr. Fatima

AA Parents,

I hope that you are having a restful weekend inshalla. I wanted to update you about a few things that are happening in our Language Arts class.

With regards to Writing we looked at the importance of choosing a strong idea for writing. A strong idea should be specific and clear. Following a strong idea should be a topic sentence. In class, we explored ways to start writing our paragraphs by reviewing what a main idea is. A main a idea tells the reader what a piece of writing is mostly about. The main idea is expressed in what is called a topic sentence. Students used a web to plan their topic sentences and supporting sentences. Students did this very well in class.

Next steps for our writing is using the "5 Ws" to add details. Details are ideas that make our writing more interesting.

In reading I will introduce RazKidz to students next week inshalla. Razkidz is a dynamic website where kids go for engaging reading practice. With Raz-Kids, students can listen to, read, and even record themselves reading literary and informational eBooks anywhere they have Internet access. Make reading fun for your kids. I hope to give out usernames and passwords next week as well.

It is also always helpful to encourage your child to read everyday for about 20-30 minutes.

Math work

AA dear parents,

Your kids went home with their workbooks and extra practice worksheets. They have to do p 10 in their workbook (lesson 2: renaming numbers). The worksheets are extra practice for the first Chapter. We will in sha'Allah redo the math test on Monday. Students need to practice more to improve their "end of chapter tests' marks.

New Math chapter (Numeration)

Assalamu Alaykom dear parents,

Over the next three weeks, your child will be working with numbers from 0 to 1000. The students will represents and describe numbers such as 894 in a variety of ways and situations. Relationships among numbers and among digits in numbers will be emphasized as students rename, round, compare, and order numbers, explore number patterns, and develop number sense. Your child will also work with money to estimate, count, and write money amounts up to $10 and work with bills up to $100.
Throughout this time, you and your child can practise some at-home activities such as the following:

  • You and your child can play a game using two sets of number cards labelled 0 to 9. Shuffle the cards and, without looking, choose two cards to form a 2-digit number. Ask your child to say the number, and to write the number in expanded form with words. For example, 75 can be made from two cards numbered 7 and 5. In expanded form, it is written as 70+5 and in expanded form with words, it is 7 tens 5 ones. After your child had lots of practice with 2-digit numbers, you can play the same game with 3-digit numbers, using three sets of numbered cards.
  • Say aloud various 2- and 3-digit numbers and ask your child to find the cards to make the numbers.
  • Choose a book with a large number of pages. Open the book to a random page and ask your child to tell you the numbers 1 greater than, 1 less than, 10 greater than, and 10 less than the page number.
  • Your child can count out the amount of money required when making a purchase in a store with you.
We really need your help at home so our students strive for success.
 Jazakum Allah khairan,

Tr. Hajer

Assalamu Alaikum Dear Parents
Time is just flying by and we are already in October.
So far we are working on our daily vocabulary, using it in sentences, questions and answers. Al Hamdulillah, students are starting to gain some confidence in speaking French in class.
We are working on our first story “Les Trois Petits Cochons”. Students were given the photocopy of the story today.  This week, Insha’a Allah, we will start the reading comprehension activity related to the story “Choisis le bon mot”.
Update:
·         Tuesday, October 28, we are having the 1st French test: spelling and vocabulary.
·         The spelling list for Tuesday is:
1.       froid
2.       chaud
3.       un peu
4.       beaucoup
5.       lundi
6.       mardi
7.       mercredi
8.       jeudi
9.       vendredi
10.   samedi

Important note: Please note that only one photocopy of the story and of any written activity will be given to the student. It is his/her responsibility to keep it safe in the folder and to have it in class. If for any reason, the document is misplaced or lost, student will have to rewrite it. If you wish to have a copy for home, you may make one copy for this purpose.
Jazakum Allah Kheiran for your cooperation and your support.

Tips: How to Improve Writing?

As Salam Alaikum Parents,

I received a lot of requests regarding writing strategies to help your child improve. The best way to improve your child’s writing is to have them write more.  I was reading an article online called “Put it to Paper: Tips for Parents to Improve a Child’s Writing Skills" by Audrey W. Prince, and she has a lot of great writing ideas that can be implemented in the family home from day to day. Here are a few ideas I took from the article and would like to share with you. The activities are quick and easy that students deem as fun and not as a chore.
Activities:
Send a Message - Frequently leave notes on pillows, desks, mirrors, wherever. Have yourchild write you a note in return. A family chalkboard or message board is a great tool forencouraging your child to write messages.

Letters - Make letter writing a habit for your child. Have your child write letters to family and
friends.

“Year in Review” Notebook - Keep an ongoing record of your family’s life. Every family member can add to your family’s story. Include important events that happen during the year. On New Year’s Eve, sit down and read through your “Year in Review” and start a notebook for the next year. To add to your story, include family photos whenever possible.

Postcards - Have your child write and mail postcards on family vacations or special outings.

Say “Thank You” - Let your child get in the habit of writing “Thank You” notes for gifts or whenever it is appropriate to do so.

Journals – As a gift, give your child a special journal. Encourage your child to
write in his/her journal as often as possible.

Make a Menu - Let your child design and write the menu for a family dinner. This is a great activity that will keep a child busy while mom or dad is cooking. If some of the words are difficult, write them down on a separate sheet of paper for the child to copy.
Be Creative - Encourage your child to write and perform skits or puppet shows. Set aside time for other family members to see the performance.

Travel log - When you go on vacations, trips, or special outings, have your child record new sights and experiences from his/her journey.

Copy - If your child likes a particular song (nasheed), have him/her copy
the lyrics. Children can also copy their favorite poem, quotation, or short book. encourageneatness for legibility.

InshAllah these activities will help your child’s writing and keep you updated on their progress. Make sure to encourage your child and focus on the content and understanding at first rather than the grammar and punctuation.  It also creates a bonding experience among the family which is truly valuable at most JazakAllah-Khairan for your support and I truly hope you try a few of these activities.
