Dear Parents,
A project motivates students to gain knowledge, and they remember it longer. Projects give students the chance to apply the skills they learn in school to personally relevant and real-world situations. Your child also learns skills in Project Based Learning such as how to think critically, solve problems, work in teams, and make presentations. These skills will help students succeed in the future, both in school and in today’s work world.
Our project is called “Pioneers”.
Starting from 17 Nov.,2015 it will last about 2 to 3 weeks. Students will learn about some of the major challenges that different groups and communities faced in Canada from around 1780 to 1850. The project’s Driving Question, which focuses our work, is “What is the difference between pioneer times and the modern days?” Students will be involved in researching on the Internet, preparing an oral presentation, creating different media formats like brochures, flyers, posters, etc. To make it more related, students will also learn about the Early Muslim settlers in Canada.
At the end of the project students will make presentations to the class.
Students will be meeting curriculum expectations of Social studies, Media Literacy, Writing, Reading and Oral communication. Students will be assessed individually on their content knowledge as well as on Learning skills and work habits during the whole process.
P.S: Rubrics for Social Studies project will be taken home today in shallah. Students have to come up with a plan before they really start working on it. They should preferably work with partners. They choose their own partners.
