The students are working on writing a (min.) 3 paragraph story where they are imagining they are participating in the Olympics. To date we have covered the Beginning and Middle paragraphs. When they finish their 3rd paragraph we will work on typing their story in shaa Allah.

Recently, we have started new programs for spelling, grammar and punctuation as well.

Feb 18 Update

salamun alaykum,

Language

The students have been given two 4-page booklets to practice grammar and punctuation (e.g. statements and questions). It is very important that the children complete and understand these sheets because it will help them better decode and understand long-answer word problems like those they will encounter on the EQAO test. DUE FRIDAY

4 Journal Entries (approx. 10-16 should be done by Friday)

Math/Science

The students will continue to learn and apply their knowledge of 3-D shapes, buildings, and structures. Currently, we are building frames for skyscrapers in class. We will soon try to use our knowledge of nets to create shells for the building frames in shaa Allah.
Textbook pg 270-271 due Friday

Social Studies

Continuing our work on the topic of Pioneers/settlers and Early peoples of Canada.
Canada's Pioneers pg 34-38 due Monday

Feb 4 Update

=====================

Language

I have asked the children to keep a dictionary at home to help them with Reading and Spelling in shaa Allah.

For the spelling tests, because the children have been consistently scoring high marks for spelling I have explained to the class that I will now be testing meaning of the spelling words as well. They should use dictionaries whenever possible to understand the spelling and meaning of the spelling list words. Subsequently, spelling tests will ask the students to spell the words correctly in a sentence.

Language class the students are complimenting their 4 journal entries per week with lessons on letter writing.
Both these writing styles ask the children to put their thoughts into words - something that is difficult for young children, but it will help them give better explanations (e.g. for EQAO long answer questions).

At the beginning of the year I asked the children to complete chapter summaries of books that they were reading. I want to recharge the children's reading with your help. Please encourage your children to read for approx. 10 minutes each night. They can easily use summaries of what they read towards their 4 journal entries. Ask them about what they have been reading so they can practice organising their explainations as well.

======================

Math

Children have been working on long division. Masha Allah it is great to see their effort with such a difficult technique.

This week we will be learning techniques that can further help us with division (i.e. estimation and multiplication).

=======================
Social Studies

The students are continuing to learn about the Early Settlers of Canada and its native peoples.
In shaa Allah we will be doing some crafts and activities related to the topic and Science learning related to structures and buildings.
